How to use an electric scooter (e-scooter) lawfully
Have you noticed all the electric scooters (or ‘e-scooters’) around Mackay City the last few days? From 8 June, 2022 e-scooters are being trialed in Mackay for a period of 12 months. But there are some rules you must follow when riding an e-scooter. Here are our tips on riding e-scooters lawfully:
You must not drink and drive. You can be charged with drink driving of an e-scooter. Your blood alcohol concentration must be under 0.05%.
❌ You must not have a relevant drug present in your system. Like above, you can be charged with drug driving of an e-scooter.
❌ Do not use your phone when riding an e-scooter.
❌ You are not allowed to have more than one rider per e-scooter.
❌ Do not ride an e-scooter on CBD streets or a main road. E-scooters may only be ridden on footpaths.
✅ You must always wear a helmet when riding an e-scooter.
✅ You must be over 16 years of age to ride an e-scooter, or 12 years with adult supervision.
In addition to potential charges of drink or drug driving, you can be fined at least $137.00 for failure to comply with e-scooter rules.
